The Washington, DC office of Legal Momentum, which includes our Immigrant Women Program, offers paid internships or internships for school credit in the fall, spring, and summer academic semesters.

Summer interns are asked to make a 15-35 hour per week commitment for 10-12 weeks.

The DC office of Legal Momentum serves as the advocacy and policy arm of the organization, whose national office is located in New York City. The Washington DC office is located right in the middle of downtown, and interns not only have the chance to witness first-hand the exciting and complex legislative process, but they are also given enough responsibility to make their participation meaningful and rewarding. Issues covered include poverty and welfare reform, immigrant women (including immigration law reform, cultural diversity issues), violence against women, and childcare.

Interns will work with the Immigrant Woman Program (IWP) on a range of tasks, including:

  • Researching and analyzing legislation;
  • Drafting letters, fact sheets, and articles;
  • Attending briefings and coalition meetings;
  • Answering requests for Technical Assistance (IWP);
  • Assisting with administrative tasks as need; and
  • Additionally, Legal Momentum chairs coalitions dealing with violence against women, welfare reform, child care, and immigrant women's rights, and interns help coordinate the work of these large, diverse coalition groups.

The non-legal intern should be a recent graduate, graduate student, or undergraduate college student and should have a strong interest in women's legal rights.  A love of feminist issues, politics, and hard work is useful and a working knowledge of the American political process is recommended.

Legal Momentum encourages both women and men of all ethnic, cultural, economic and sexual orientations who support our feminist concerns to apply. Bilingual individuals also encouraged to apply. We are committed to the goals of equal opportunity and affirmative action and seek candidates whose experiences can bring a unique awareness to our women's rights legal advocacy. We seek to provide a work environment that fosters fairness and respect for inclusiveness and social and cultural variety.
