BACKGROUND: Legal Momentum, the nation's oldest legal advocacy organization dedicated to advancing the rights of women and girls, has a position open in its New York City Office for an Accountant.
JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Accountant position provides support to the Vice President for Finance and Administration. Performs basic accounting duties including cash receipts and payroll. Makes all original entries into books of account, including depreciation and other write-offs. Maintains detailed records of assets and liabilities. Performs analysis of accounts on a quarterly basis. Produces draft financial reports for management and grant reporting. Assists with the annual audit by preparing schedules, describing procedures and assisting audit personnel. Assists in the annual budgeting process.
Duties Include: Cash Receipts, Bank Reconciliations, Accounts Payable, Account Analysis, Monthly Financial Reporting, Payroll Administration, Audit Preparation and Other Responsibilities as Assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Degree in accounting and at least one year working experience, preferably in the non-profit sector. Must be able to show initiative and problem solving skills in the accounting area. Familiarity with computer accounting systems (MAS 90 a plus) and MS Excel and Word. Good English speaking and writing abilities are required. Experience with small advocacy or service non-profits is preferred.
