Women 35% More Likely to Be Poor Than Men
September 10, 2009 -The Census Bureau report issued today indicates that the national poverty rate rose to 13.2% in 2008, the highest rate since 1997, reflecting the impact of the recession that began in December 2007. The poverty rate will almost certainly rise again in 2009 as unemployment has been even higher in 2009 than in 2008.
The large gender poverty gap that has persisted since poverty measurement began in the 1960’s continued in 2008. Adult women were thirty five percent more likely to be poor than adult men in 2008, with a poverty rate of 13.0% compared to the 9.6% rate for men. 15.2 million adult women were poor, compared to 10.6 million adult men. Legal Momentum today issued a report detailing the disparities, Reading Between the Lines: Women's Poverty in the United States, 2008.
