Legal Momentum Criticizes United States Policies Concerning the Treatment of Women

June 23, 2006 -

Legal Momentum, in coalition with other U.S. organizations, contributed to the Gender Shadow Report, submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Committee on June 15. The report points out the United States' failure to uphold women's human rights standards set out by the United Nations' under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

"In particular, women who are victims of domestic violence are denied their human rights as the government fails to protect them from employment and housing discrimination," says Julie Kay, Staff Attorney at Legal Momentum.

"Young American women likewise are denied their right to be free from discrimination because the federal government continues to provide over $100 million for abstinence-only programs that censor truthful and practical information about sexuality and contraception, and promote damaging sex stereotypes," she adds.
