President Obama: Don't Forget the Women

September 9, 2011 -

In a recent speech to a joint session of Congress, President Obama described the American Jobs Act, a plan to stimulate the economy and put Americans back to work.   We applaud the President’s efforts to help put America back to work and urge Congress to pass the bill swiftly.

In advance of President Obama’s speech, Legal Momentum and 90 allied organizations wrote a letter to remind the President that women are vital to America’s economic security.  Since the Great Recession, the sluggish economic recovery has left many women struggling to find work.  While men lost more than twice as many jobs as women during the Great Recession, a recent study by the Pew Research Center found that the recovery reversed that trend. Between June 2009 and May 2011, men gained jobs while women continued to lose them.

Women are increasingly responsible for the economic security of themselves and their families. As the White House works with Congress to pass the American Jobs Act, Legal Momentum asks President Obama to remember the women – mothers, wives, caregivers, workers, home owners, tax payers, jugglers, penny pinchers, and voters.
