Leslative Advocacy: New York City
Legal Momentum is actively supporting Intro. 149 of 2006 (formerly Intro 305), proposed New York City Council legislation that would protect survivors of domestic violence, rape and stalking from discrimination in housing and allowing survivors to break a lease. These protections were initially included in Intro 107 of 2002, a bill substantially drafted by Legal Momentum which also protected victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking from discrimination in employment and required employers to make reasonable accommodations for victims. The employment provisions passed in Local Law 1 of 2001 and were amended in Local Law 75 of 2003, which requires businesses to provide "reasonable accommodations" to victims of domestic violence, allowing survivors to escape abuse and maintain economic security.
