These trainings are open to LAV, ARREST, RURAL, Safe Haven continuation grantees and partners, Coalition, and STOP grantees and subgrantees who receive funding from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women (OVW). All other OVW grantees and subgrantees must receive prior approval from their OVW Program Specialist to attend these trainings.
We are offering two training sessions, as follows:
April 6 and 7: Best Practices for Serving Immigrant Victims
A two-day training open to advocates, attorneys, justice system personnel, and other OVW grantees and their partners with less than 3 years of experience working with immigrant victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, dating violence, or trafficking. Participants will receive training and tools for offering culturally competent advocacy that strives to meet the needs of each victim individually. Attendees will receive updated information about legal protections for immigrant victims and will gain an understanding of the cultural, social, economic and legal realities immigrant victims face. The special role for advocates in working collaboratively with attorneys and other justice system personnel to help immigrant victims will also be a part of our curriculum. Capacity is limited to 60 participants.
April 8 and 9: Emerging Issues: New Tools to Help Immigrant Victims
A two-day training for intermediate and advanced professionals with more than 3 years of experience working with immigrant victims. Day one workshop offers a detailed training on VAWA confidentiality as it relates to battered immigrant clients. Day two offers participants the choice of one of the following full day workshops: Legal rights and culturally competent service provision to victims of human trafficking, or Issues at the intersection of family law and immigration. Capacity for day one of this training is 100 participants AND is open to participants from the Best Practices for Serving Immigrant Victims participants.
Both day two workshops are limited to 40 participants each.
