You can help end government funding of biased, inaccurate abstinence-only programs that particularly harm women and girls. By educating others, planning a local event, lobbying your member of Congress, and generating coverage in the media about abstinence-only programs, you will help protect women’s sexual and reproductive rights.
Get Educated!
- Visit www.legalmomentum.org or http://www.siecus.org/ to learn about the latest issues in sexual and reproductive health matters and how you can get involved. Subscribe to our newsletters to receive policy updates, advocacy alerts, and updated information.
Spread the Word!
- Talk your friends, family, and community about reproductive health battles that threaten our choices, rights, and health. For educational materials, visit www.siecus.org/pubs/pubs0004.html or download the new report Sex, Lies & Stereotypes at www.legalmomentum.org/report2008.
- Investigate local junior high and high schools to see if they are teaching comprehensive sex education. If not, contact administrators and staff to inform them about the failures of abstinence-only education. Contact SIECUS or Legal Momentum for assistance with advocating at these schools.
- Write an editorial to your campus or local news publication alerting them of the continual attack on reproductive health and rights. Get involved with your campus’ Reproductive Health student advocacy group.
- Go to http://www.nonewmoney.org/ to send your member of Congress an e-mail or get in touch with them directly by going to http://www.house.gov/ and http://www.senate.gov/ and tell them to stop federal funding for ineffective and harmful abstinence-only programs.
