Public Policy: Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)

The landmark Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) has provided billions of dollars for to help survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and dating violence. Legal Momentum chairs the National Task Force to End Sexual and Domestic Violence Against Women and played a major role in the initial passage of this legislation in 1994 and its 2000 and 2005 reauthorizations.  Learn more about the history of VAWA.

The latest renewal, signed into law on January 5, 2006, extends the legislation for five years and increases funding by twenty percent to $3.9 billion. Legal Momentum took the lead in advocating new housing, immigration, and employment provisions included in VAWA 2005.
