TANF Participation Fell in the First Half of 2011

The number of families receiving TANF in June 2011 decreased by 2.2 percent compared to January 2011, while the number of households receiving Food Stamps (SNAP) increased by 4.9 percent between January and June 2011.  The increase in Food Stamp participation suggests that the decrease in TANF participation was more likely due to stricter state eligibility and access policies than to decreased need.
