  • Understanding Sexual Violence: The Judicial Response to Stranger and Nonstranger Rape and Sexual Assault

    A two-day model curriculum that focuses on dealing fairly with sexual assault cases, especially nonstranger rapes. It provides interdisciplinary research from law, medicine, and the social sciences about adult victim sexual assault and invites judges to consider how this information relates to their responsibilities in the pre-trial, trial, and sentencing phases of sexual assault trials, and as leaders in the criminal justice system and the community.

  • A model curriculum developed with the American Prosecutors Research Institute to provide prosecutors with tools for successful sex crimes prosecutions, especially nonstranger rapes. The curriculum covers such topics as rape myths and stereotypes and their effect on charging decisions, jury selection and jury deliberations; how victim impact affects victim interviewing and preparation; experts such as certified sexual assault examiners; drug-facilitated rape; plea offers and sentencing.

    • Intimate Partner Sexual Abuse (IPSA) is an often overlooked aspect of domestic violence cases. Research with battered women reveals that IPSA ranging from verbal degradation to rape is a frequent aspect of domestic violence. Taking all risk factors into account, a batterer who subjects his partner to forced sex in addition to physical violence is twice as likely to kill her as a batterer who inflicts physical violence only.
    • IPSA victims require additional support and services to maintain personal safety and the safety of their children, and to recover from the trauma.
    • Aspects of the model curricula:
      • NJEP’s curriculum is available at no charge for a variety of uses: it can be utilized as the basis for in-person trainings and webinars or reviewed by individuals online.
      • The curriculum consists of:
        • A faculty manual for teachers
        • A Power Point presentation with suggested commentary
        • Exercises for participants
        • Handouts for participants
        • The curriculum can be adapted to local laws and practices

  • Although Elder Abuse is a topic familiar to many Americans, Elder Sexual Abuse remains often overlooked—despite its prevalence and the damage it can cause.

    Elder sexual abuse is a distinct form of victimization in which victims’ age and health further complicate the particular challenges that every sexual abuse/assault case presents for the courts. This curriculum explores the research on elder sexual abuse and its implications for civil and criminal courts.

  • The treatment of female Drug Court participants is rarely addressed as a stand-alone issue in judicial education programs and trainings for Drug Court professionals. Judicial education programs must take a comprehensive look at women and trauma to successfully treat substance abusing women who have been victimized by sexual and physical violence.

    This Web course provides an in-depth look at dealing specifically with women, trauma, and substance abuse.

    This course will instruct participants in:  

  • This model curriculum informs participants about the problems women of color face at every level and in every aspect of the judicial system, as litigants, witnesses, defendants, employees, lawyers, and judges.

    The materials included encourage judges to think about actions they can take to address these problems, in order to insure women of color equal access to justice and equal participation in the judicial system.
