Full Case Title:
United States of America v. Zackey Rahimi
- Violence Against Women and Girls
Year:
2024
- Domestic Violence and Children
- Joined Amicus Brief
Brief:
The 5th Circuit Court held that 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(8), which prohibits the possession of firearms by persons who have domestic violence restraining orders, violates the 2nd Amendment by misunderstanding New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc v. Bruen. This decision should be reversed given that it would expose many parts of the country to dangers posed by armed domestic abusers. Enabling them to have continued access to firearms is a serious threat to public safety. Seventy women are shot and killed each month in the United States by their intimate partner. Even when guns are not used to kill, abusers often use them to assault, threaten, terrorize, and control their intimate partners.
