Lynn Hecht Schafran Receives ABA’s Sharon L. Corbitt Award for Dedication to Victims of Domestic Violence

The American Bar Association Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence has honored Legal Momentum’s Vice President and Director of the National Judicial Education Program Lynn Hecht Schafran with the 2014 Sharon L. Corbitt Award. The award recognizes lawyers from all areas of practice who demonstrate exemplary service to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and/or stalking, in the spirit of Sharon L. Corbitt. Ms. Corbitt was an active member of the ABA for 25 years, and served on the Commission on Domestic Violence and as chair of the Family Law Section, making exemplary professional and personal contributions to victims of domestic violence throughout her career.

The National Judicial Education Program to Promote Equality for Women and Men in the Courts (NJEP), is a project of Legal Momentum in cooperation with the National Association of Women Judges. As its director since 1981, Ms. Schafran has developed or co-authored several judicial education curricula and interactive web courses on topics related to domestic and sexual violence and stalking, including Understanding Sexual Violence: The Judicial Response to Stranger and Nonstranger Rape and Sexual Assault, Intimate Partner Sexual Abuse: Adjudicating This Hidden Dimension of Domestic Violence Cases, and most recently, Medical Forensic Sexual Assault Examinations: What Are They and What Can They Tell the Courts? A DVD titled The Undetected Rapist, which she co-authored, was recently cited in Time magazine’s cover story on campus sexual assault. Ms. Schafran has led trainings, workshops, and presentations on domestic and sexual violence and the courts for multidisciplinary audiences nationwide. She has also written widely on legal topics for a variety for audiences, most recently an in-depth article on the neuroscience of how exposure to domestic violence affects children’s development for The Judges Journal.

Ms. Schafran has been active on numerous committees and commissions and was an original member of the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession for which she now serves as liaison from Legal Momentum. She is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a member of the American Law Institute. She was a presidential appointee to the Defense Department Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS), and chaired the Committee on Sex and Law of the New York City Bar Association.

The award ceremony and reception, co-hosted by the ABA Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence, the ABA Section of Family Law, and Greenberg Traurig, LLP, took place during the ABA’s Annual Meeting on Friday, August 8, 2014 in Boston.
