Legal Momentum welcomes the opportunity to comment on the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) proposed rule seeking to amend regulations regarding whether an alien is considered a “public charge” and consequently should be excluded from the United States.

Instead of promoting self-sufficiency, the proposed rule will penalize hard-working low- and moderate-income immigrant families, hurt our economy by increasing poverty and inequality, compromise the health and welfare of women and children, and jeopardize the safety of immigrant survivors of gender-based violence. Accordingly, we urge DHS to act expeditiously to withdraw this proposed rule in its entirety.
