What You May Have Missed in July

Reproductive Rights Resources

  • On July 19th, Legal Momentum launched a new Reproductive Rights Resources page on our website to assist any person, regardless of where they live, with information about accessing abortion and other reproductive healthcare services.

Drug Testing Pregnant Patients: What You Need to Know

  • On July 26th, as part of our Reproductive Justice Efforts, we published our newest resource: Drug Testing Pregnant Patients: What You Need to Know. We created this resource in response to the practice of hospitals non-consensually drug testing pregnant patients. It provides pregnant people with baseline information about the harms and potential consequences of non-consensual testing, their rights as a pregnant person seeking healthcare, and ways to take action if they have been subjected to this practice.

Victory in Wisconsin Supreme Court

  • On July 6th, Legal Momentum received a winning decision in Wisconsin v. Chrystul Kizer. We led multiple Amicus Briefs in the case that provided the appellate courts with expert insight into the unique trauma of sex trafficking and its impact on victims’ cognitive functioning. As a result of the decision, Chrystul Kizer, a child sex trafficking survivor, will now be able to use an affirmative defense under Wisconsin State law, that, if successful, could acquit her of all charges against her.

White House Ceremony for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act

  • And on July 11th, Legal Momentum Legal Director, Jennifer Becker, and Legal Fellow, Kyra Batté, were invited to the White House for a ceremony to commemorate the passage of the new law.
