COVID-19: Halting Overreach Curtailing Women's Legal Rights

If you are being watched, leave now!

April 27, 2020

A pandemic is not an excuse to strip women of their reproductive rights and access to reproductive healthcare. Yet that is exactly what we have seen happen in several states in the U.S.: Governors and other state officials have issued orders to keep Americans safe from this COVID-19 public health crisis, but use them as a vehicle to severely restrict women’s access to abortion.

Access to safe reproductive healthcare is central to our mission of advancing gender equality. We know that lack of access to reproductive healthcare has lasting health and economic impacts on womenand their families; it has a disproportionate impact on low-income women and their families, victims of domestic and sexual violencewomen of color, and other marginalized groups.

Like several other states, Alabama is attempting to use the COVID-19 pandemic to essentially ban abortions in Alabama. Last week, Legal Momentum, the National Organization for Women Foundation, and the Feminist Majority Foundation—joined by an historic coalition of 18 civil rights and women’s rights organizations—submitted an amicus curiae (“friend of court”) brief to the 11th Circuit supporting the federal district court’s decision to prevent Alabama’s COVID-19 order from resulting in the denial of abortion access to the women of Alabama and the potential criminalization of abortion providers.

We will continue to support women in Alabama and everywhere else in the country to ensure we all have access to safe reproductive healthcare and autonomy over our own bodies.

If you would like to invest in our work defending women’s right to have access to safe reproductive health care, we’d be honored if you would consider donating. No gift is too small.

Protecting women’s and girls’ rights begins with the law.
