Paid Sick/Family Leave & COVID-19

If you are being watched, leave now!

March 27, 2020

Legal Momentum has long focused on the legal needs of the most vulnerable and marginalized of women – to protect all women’s economic and physical security.

Today we are proud to join over 180 organizations signing a letter to Congress urging the passage of the PAID Leave Act. The spread of COVID-19, causing quarantines, school closures, and the nationwide shutdown of businesses, reveals that too many workers do not have access to paid sick and family leave.

In the United States, more than 32 million lack access to paid sick days. This disproportionately affects the country’s lowest-paid workers, many of them women, many in industries like food service or childcare.  Essential industries that put workers at high risk of contact with the virus.

The PAID Leave Act closes loopholes in existing legislation and provides support for workers who are still not eligible for paid sick time or family leave during the COVID-19 outbreak. The Act builds upon The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (H.R. 6201) to ensure that most working people have access to 14 days of paid sick leave and 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave for use during the COVID-19 outbreak or any future public health emergency.  Notably, the bill creates permanent paid sick and family leave benefits, to ensure that working families have critical benefits even beyond this public health crisis.
