Tuesday, July 15, 2014

Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, and Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee Chair Mark Begich invited Legal Momentum to join their senate colleagues and leaders from national women’s organizations for a discussion on women’s economic and health security on Wednesday, July 9, 2014.

Laura A. Wilkinson at the U.S. Senate

Laura A. Wilkinson, First Vice Chair of the Board of Directors, and Lisalyn Jacobs, Vice President of Governmental Relations, represented Legal Momentum in this important committee meeting, which presented a key opportunity to advocate for survivors of domestic violence. Ms. Wilkinson reminded the committee that, as Vice President Biden said last month at the White House Summit on Working Families, “You cannot talk about opportunity for women, unless you talk about dealing with… in the work environment…  domestic violence." She went on to emphasize that “in battleground states, violence against women ranks second in terms of people's concerns--right after jobs. These issues are linked for many people.”

Legal Momentum will continue to advocate for stronger protections for domestic and sexual violence survivors, including ensuring that survivors are aware that many paid leave proposals and recently passed laws contain provisions that specifically address their needs.
