This sheet is part of our collection of eleven Teen Dating Violence Information and Resources Sheets.
This guide addresses several of the perceived and real barriers for young people seeking Orders of Protection and judges seeking to craft them effectively in teen dating violence (TDV) cases. For example, adolescents often use different language to describe their dating relationships, including terminology such as “hooking up.” Recognizing that youth in middle and high school can perpetrate dating abuse is an important step to providing protections for youth victims.
Additional challenges addressed in this guide include the differing levels of access available to young people seeking Orders of Protection across the country, and the complicated role of technology and the school system that can affect or undermine victim safety and offender accountability in TDV cases.
