ABOUT LEGAL MOMENTUM
Legal Momentum was founded as the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund in 1970. We are the oldest national women’s rights legal advocacy organization, with a rich history in litigation and public policy development. We have worked to enact, expand, and enforce many of the most important laws and policies that affect women, including employment rights under Title VII, educational equity under Title IX, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and Human Trafficking. Since 1980, Legal Momentum’s National Judicial Education Program (NJEP) has educated judges, attorneys, and justice system professionals about the ways in which gender bias can undermine fairness in criminal, civil, family, and juvenile law. NJEP has a particular focus on sexual assault cases and cases involving the intersection of sexual assault and domestic violence.
The legal intern will work primarily on two NJEP projects: the development of our new online training, Helping Sexual Assault Victims Navigate the Criminal Justice System, which will provide non-lawyer victim advocates with an understanding of the criminal justice system and their role in supporting sexual assault victims navigating that system, or considering it; and the updating of our extant web course Intimate Partner Sexual Abuse (IPSA): Adjudicating This Hidden Aspect of Domestic Violence Cases, accessible free at http://njep-ipsacourse.org/, which is a curriculum for judges and justice system professionals to learn about intimate partner sexual abuse, the intersection of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Responsibilities include: legal and non-legal research to ensure that the IPSA web course is up to date, development of a “companion manual” to facilitate state- and local-level use of the new online training, development of the new training’s host website, correspondence, maintaining resource archives, and other projects that arise.
This position is part-time, with interns expected to work roughly 10 hours/week. The intern will perform work on a federally-funded grant project and, as such, the intern will be compensated with a stipend of $20 per hour for ten weeks. Applicants are urged, however, to investigate alternative sources of financial support. Students may also be enrolled in a course which awards academic credit for the internship.
