Summary of the Case

Christine Franklin brought a suit after her high school failed to take any action to stop a teacher and coach from sexually harassing her, and then closed its investigation of her charges after allowing the teacher to resign. Her suit was initially dismissed because the court ruled she cannot sue for money damages and no other relief is available, since both she and the teacher are no longer at the school.

Decision

The Supreme Court reversed the lower court's decision, ruling that money damages are available under Title IX, which greatly expands its effectiveness as a remedy for sex discrimination in federally-funded education.
