Summary

Anne Wedow and Kathleen Kline, career firefighters with the Kansas City fire department, sought to uphold jury verdicts in their favor on claims of discrimination for not providing women adequate firefighting protective gear and firehouse changing and showering facilities, and retaliation against them for prior discrimination complaints.

Decision

The U.S. Court of Appeals upheld the jury verdicts, marking the first time a federal appeals court found a lack of protective gear and facilities to be discriminatory.  The court rejected Kansas City's argument that inadequate gear and facilities do not rise to the level of violating Title VII, the federal anti-discriminatory statute.
