Legal Momentum applauds the President for his comments on equal pay, and improving the workplace during the State of the Union address last night. “It’s time to do away with workplace policies that belong in a ‘Mad Men,’ episode,“ he said. We couldn’t agree more. We also agree with the challenges the President laid out with respect to women’s workplace needs: “She deserves to have a baby without sacrificing her job. A mother deserves a day off to care for a sick parent or a sick child without running into hardship.” To that list we would add: Families need both sick and safe days. Women deserve time off to get a protection order without getting fired. The same employer preconceptions that adversely impact pregnant women affect survivors of violence, and both are sometimes in need of simple, uncomplicated accommodations to allow them to keep working and keep supporting their families. We thank the President for his vision and his leadership, and we look forward to working with the Administration and the Congress to create policies and laws that make workplaces safer and fairer for all.
