Legal Momentum applauds and thanks President Obama for taking executive action to end the scourge of gun violence plaguing our country. Too often, domestic violence survivors and their families are endangered by gun violence and threats of gun violence. The President’s common-sense proposals—including expanding and improving background checks, preventing firearms trafficking, increasing access to mental health treatment, encouraging better reporting of mental health records to the federal background check system, and promoting the development of new gun safety technologies—will strengthen our nation’s resolve to keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them. We are also heartened that Attorney General Lynch has urged all U.S. Attorneys’ offices to vigorously pursue all federal cases involving illegal firearm possession. We look forward to working with the Obama Administration to move forward with implementation of the President’s proposals. We believe they are vital to making this country safer for victims of partner violence, for our children, and for ourselves.

About Legal Momentum

Legal Momentum is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1970 to advance the rights of women across the nation by using the power of the law and creating innovative public policy in three broad areas: economic justice, freedom from gender-based violence, and equality under the law. Successful initiatives include drafting and helping to pass the Violence Against Women Act and its subsequent reauthorizations; judicial education programs on the realities of sexual assault, domestic violence, and their intersection; and representing women who have been subjected to discrimination with precedent-setting litigation.
