Issue of Women and Poverty in the News

Monday, January 13, 2014

At the time of the 50th anniversary of the "War on Poverty" famously declared by President Lyndon B. Johnson, a new report released by The Shriver Report, A Woman's Nation Pushes Back from the Brink, is bringing media attention to the issues of women and poverty that Legal Momentum has long championed. In fact, Legal Momentum has also released a new report on the occasion.

The Center for American Progress has made a brief executive summary of the Shriver report available online.  The full report is available in Amazon Kindle format free of charge through January 15th.

One key message from the report is that

"The American family has permanently changed, and women head up more families on their own. More than half of the babies born to women ages 30 and younger are born to unmarried mothers, most of them white. In our poll, nearly two-thirds of Americans and 85 percent of Millennials believe that government should adapt to the reality of single-parent families and use its resources to help children and mothers succeed, regardless of family status."

This echoes the conclusion of our Worst Off report that a strong social safety net is essential for the long-term economic security of women, families, and the nation.

Legal Momentum's poverty expert Tim Casey was interviewed about the 50th anniversary of the War on Poverty this morning by Baltimore's Marc Steiner Show and on KPFA's Saturday Morning Talkies on January 10th.
