Empowering Young Women of Color in Times of Crisis

If you are being watched, leave now!

April 15, 2020

Rights Now!, our innovative peer education program, continues its groundbreaking work remotely during this CV-19 pandemic to empower young women of color and other youth to identify and respond to sexual abuse, violence, and sex-based discrimination.

Rights Now! provides the skills and resources to help young people identify and respond to forms of dating and domestic abuse, cyber-bullying and sexual exploitation, as well as the legal resources and rights available to them on how to report and navigate school-based violence and sex-based discrimination.

Never has Rights Now! work been more important - reaching young women and other youth to ensure they understand the dynamics of cyber-abuse - how to respond – how to seek assistance - as internet platforms and social media keep us connected during this crisis.

During this time of crisis, we’ve made sure our peer educators continue to be financially compensated and continue to benefit – remotely - from 12 weeks of training that provides professional and personal development – in addition to the workshops they execute in their communities to their peers.  A “living” program, all participants help develop and shape every aspect—from the workshop curriculum to their own training.  The results? Powerful.

The workshops that our peer educators present to groups of their peers across our nation’s largest city, NYC, are generously funded by the NYC Council’s Young Women’s Initiative. Now, Rights Now! looks forward to serving other young women of color and other youth nationwide.

Our work empowering young women is more important than ever.  Across the country, victims of gender-based violence are more vulnerable during this crisis and women the majority at the pandemic front lines in essential jobs that are chronically underpaid and chronically undervalued – Rights Now! could not be more relevant. Learn more about this powerful program.

As CV-19’s impact continues to unfold, if you’d like to see Rights Now! work expand nationwide, we’d be honored by your support. Every dollar you donate ensures that young women and other youth, know the dynamics of a healthy relationship, their legal rights, and how to respond to sexual abuse, violence, and sex-based discrimination – as they grow into the women of tomorrow.

Protecting women’s and girls’ rights begins with the law.
