Re “Fire Dept. Doubles Minority and Female Applicants” (nytimes.com, May 9):

The headline does not tell the full story. The firefighter exam is given only every few years. Women were less than 5 percent of the more than 42,000 who took the most recent test. This is not acceptable.

Latest Poverty Data Highlights Critical Need To Strengthen The Social Safety Net

The poverty report for 2011 released today by the Census Bureau indicates that the poverty rate was 15.0% in 2011, slightly less than the 15.1% rate in 2010, but well above the 12.3% rate in 2006, the year prior to the beginning of the ‘Great Recession.’ The 15% rate was the fourth highest in the past 45 years. The 40.9% poverty rate for single mother families was the highest since 1997.

Legal Momentum Releases Important Report On The Exclusion Of Women From Apprenticeship Programs For The Skilled Construction Trades

The Department of Labor’s affirmative action mandate adopted in 1978 has failed to achieve its purpose, as women still hold fewer than three percent of skilled trades apprenticeships and jobs. Legal Momentum, the nation’s oldest nonprofit advocating for the legal rights of women in America, announced the release of a report detailing how the U.S. Department of Labor’s affirmative action regulations intended to significantly increase women’s participation in registered apprenticeship programs has failed to do so. “Still Excluded – There Are Still Virtually No Women In The Federally Created And Supervised Apprenticeship System For The Skilled Construction Trades” is an important analysis of the problems in the federally-created national Registered Apprenticeship system, including lack of federal oversight (compliance reviews), underfunding of the Women in Apprenticeship and Nontraditional Occupations Act, and discrimination and harassment of women who are in apprenticeships.

Legal Momentum, the nation’s oldest nonprofit advocating for the legal rights of women in America, today announced the release of a new report on the impact of the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program (TANF) on poor families. The report provides a clear, authoritative measure of how well TANF has done in each year since 1996, the year it was enacted, in providing assistance to poor families. Only a fraction of all families with incomes at or below the official poverty level receive TANF assistance despite their need. And those who do receive benefits actually receive amounts well below the income figures considered as those at the official poverty level.
