March 21, 2012 - The U.S. Supreme Court decision in Coleman v. Maryland Court of Appeals is a huge defeat for working people and gender equity. As a practical matter, the decision allows states to deny leave to state workers who are temporarily unable to work due to pregnancy or illness even when the workers are eligible for leave under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act. This ruling hits working women especially hard. They are now more vulnerable than ever when attempting to maintain healthy pregnancies and families while still earning a paycheck or holding onto a job. We will be working towards legislation to address this roll back of existing protection.
